Wadi Al-Hitan, Whale Valley, in the Western Desert of Egypt, contains invaluable fossil remains of the earliest, and now extinct, suborder of whales, Archaeoceti. These fossils represent one of the major stories of evolution: the emergence of the whale as an ocean-going mammal from a previous life as a land-based animal. This is the most important site in the world for the demonstration of this stage of evolution. It portrays vividly the form and life of these whales during their transition. The number, concentration and quality of such fossils here is unique, as is their accessibility and setting in an attractive and protected landscape. The fossils of Al-Hitan show the youngest archaeocetes, in the last stages of losing their hind limbs. Other fossil material in the site makes it possible to reconstruct the surrounding environmental and ecological conditions of the time.
Tour program
· Early departure from Cairo to Tunis Village in Fayoum (7 AM near Tahrir square)
· Once we reach the village, enjoy a short break where you can enjoy short walk in the village or a cup of tea with the view of the village. (Extra not included).
Suggestions: “Sobek lodge” for a short break. They have a nice terrace with a view of the greenery & Qarun Lake. They also offer breakfast, tea and refreshing drinks (Food & drinks NOT included in tour fees)
· Departure with 4 x 4 cars to Wadi el rayan protected area.
· Visit the valley of the whales (Wadi el Hitan), the museum there and enjoy free time hiking in Wadi el Hitan.
· Safari with the 4 X 4 car to discover interesting spots in the desert of Fayoum. (Tentative to what the police of tourism allows on tour day. They might only allow a drive by 4 X 4 car to Wadi Hitan then back to Tunis village.)
· Late lunch in the desert then back to Cairo
Notes in case of group tours: (Different for private tours)
- Tours are not suitable for children below 10
- Group size: 14 – 15 guests
- Tour language: English, if we have non-Arabic speakers
(If not, then it will be in Arabic) - A minimum number is needed for the tour to take place. We reserve the right to cancel the tour anytime, if it doesn’t reach the minimum number needed. In that case, guests will be advised by email and refund will take place
- Exact drop pin and details about meeting point, starting time, contacts… will be communicated by email 1 day prior to tour date. Kindly make sure you check your email (including Junk folder) 1 day before tour date.

- Entrance tickets for foreigners (15 USD to be paid in cash USD only/ No EGP by the guest per person on site)
